Join us on Saturday, July 6, 9:30–11:45 am, to hear Old Testament scholar and Summer Programs faculty member Dr. Beth Stovell deliver a lecture titled “God’s Voice in the Whirlwind: How Job Offers Hope amidst Suffering, Grief, and Loss.”
About the Lecture
The book of Job tells the story of a righteous man who loses everything and his journey towards hope. It helps us grapple with many questions that arise when we experience suffering. How do we respond when everything in our lives is turned upside down? How do we make sense of grief, pain, and suffering? And where is hope? The book of Job offers us an up-close picture of righteous suffering, the pain of accusatory friends, and the hope of God’s presence in the depths of great loss.
About the Speaker
Dr. Beth M. Stovell is Professor of Old Testament and Chair of General Theological Studies at Ambrose Seminary of Ambrose University. She has published books on biblical hermeneutics, John’s Gospel, and the Book of the Twelve Minor Prophets. She is currently Series Co-Editor (with David Baker) of the Apollos Old Testament Commentary series, and is writing commentaries and books on the Minor Prophets, John’s Gospel, biblical poetry, and a biblical theology of suffering and hope.
A Regent alumna, Dr. Stovell fondly remembers her time working at the Regent Bookstore—and meeting her husband Jon in the atrium.
Dr. Stovell is teaching a Summer course on Reading & Preaching Biblical Poetry (July 8–12, 8:30–11:30, onsite or online).
